Product details description

Building a corner with split rail panels requires precision and proper technique to ensure stability, alignment, and visual coherence—split rail fences are rustic, open-style fences commonly used for property boundaries or livestock containment, and their corners are critical for maintaining the fence’s structural integrity. Unlike solid fences, split rail corners rely on reinforced posts and proper panel attachment to withstand tension and prevent sagging. The process involves selecting the right posts, preparing the site, and assembling the corner with attention to alignment.

First, select the appropriate posts and prepare the corner site. Split rail fences require sturdy, pressure-treated wood posts (typically 6x6 inches) for corners, as they bear the tension of the fence panels. Mark the corner location with a stake, then dig two post holes (one for each fence run) at a 90-degree angle, 3–4 feet deep and 12–16 inches wide. Add 6 inches of gravel to each hole for drainage, then set the posts in concrete, ensuring they are plumb (vertical) and aligned at a perfect 90-degree angle. Use a string line and level to verify alignment—this step is crucial for the corner’s stability and the fence’s overall straightness. Allow the concrete to cure for 24–48 hours before attaching the panels.

Next, attach the split rail panels to the corner posts. Split rail panels typically have 2–3 rails, and they attach to posts using wooden pegs or galvanized screws. Start with the first fence run: slide the end of the panel over the corner post, ensuring the rails fit snugly against the post. Secure the panel to the post using pegs (driven through pre-drilled holes in the rails and post) or screws, which provide a stronger hold. Repeat the process for the second fence run, attaching the panel to the same corner post at a 90-degree angle. Ensure both panels are level and taut, with no gaps between the rails and the post. For added stability, install diagonal braces from the top of each corner post to the adjacent post in each fence run—this prevents the posts from leaning under tension. Finish the corner by adding post caps for a polished look and to protect the posts from moisture. With proper installation, a split rail corner will be sturdy, visually appealing, and able to withstand the test of time.
